Dead Friendships...

and Permission to Let Go.

Friendships in your second act look different than they did at 25. And if you’re holding onto relationships out of obligation rather than genuine connection, you’re not alone.

My wife and I had a conversation recently that I haven’t been able to shake. We were talking about friendships - specifically, the ones that feel one-sided. The friends who only reach out when they need something. The ones who disappear when life is good but show up when things are rough - for them, not you. The relationships we keep investing in, even when that investment isn’t reciprocated.

Here’s what I’ve realized: when you’re younger, friendships happen by default. You’re in the same place, doing the same things, figuring life out together. But in your second act? Friendships have to be intentional. You’re busier. You have more responsibilities. Your time is limited. And the question becomes: who actually deserves that time?

In this lesson, I talk about recognizing the patterns of one-sided friendships, whether it’s worth having the hard conversation, and why giving yourself permission to let go isn’t selfish - it’s necessary. I also share what I teach my hockey players about speaking up and advocating for themselves, and how that applies to the relationships we keep in our lives.

Some friendships are worth fighting for. Some aren’t. And it’s OK to know the difference.

If you’ve been carrying friendships that feel heavy, this one’s for you.
